Sagamore To Close For Winter
LAKE GEORGE NY -- The weak economy is effecting the Sagamore this winter, one of the most popular hotels in the Lake George region.
The Sagamore hotel in Bolton Landing will be closing its doors this winter for the first time in its operation. In previous years, the Sagamore stayed open on weekends throughout the winter. This year, however, owners of the hotel say the economy is too weak to support sufficient business this season.
The resort will be closing from January 4 through March 2009. As a result, 200 workers will be laid off temporarily. The Sagamore employs about 600 workers in peak season and typically pares down some after the summer months.
This is the Sagamore's first winter under new ownership. Sagbolt LLC, a subsidiary of Delray Beach, Florida-based Ocean Properties Ltd. purchased the Sagamore in August. Dozens of jobs were cut after the resort changed hands, but original plans were to keep it open this winter, as in years past.
Many other Lake George lodging venues close for the winter months, which is considered the "off season" in Lake George, so it is not unreasonable for the Sagamore to follow suit. There are, however, quite a few accommodations that remain open in winter. Browse winter lodging venues »»
